Your toilet bowl is home to a lot of bacteria. Some come straight from our gut, and those are the ones you'd rather not have around.

But what if you could choose which bacteria take over? That's the whole idea behind YOKUU. And our first lab test looks promising.

What's living in your toilet?

Every time someone uses the toilet, gut bacteria end up in the bowl: E. coli, Enterobacteriaceae and other coliform bacteria.

In your gut, many of them are perfectly normal. But in your toilet, it's a different story.

When you flush, tiny water droplets form. They're called aerosols, and they can carry bacteria into the air.

So: fewer unwanted gut bacteria, more useful cleaning helpers. That's the toilet we want.

Meet YOKUU's good bacteria

Our Toilet Bombs and Toilet Foam Explosion bring 1 billion probiotic cleaning helpers into your toilet.

They're carefully selected bacteria from the Bacillus family, and cleaning is what they do best.

Here's how they help:

  • They take up space. They use up room and nutrients, which can make it harder for other bacteria to settle.
  • They break down organic dirt. Their enzymes help break down residue and tackle urine smells.
  • They help your toilet stay clean for longer. Breaking down organic residue helps limit build-up and discolouration.

And the best part: they don't clock off when you're done cleaning.

But do they stay behind after you flush?

That's exactly what we wanted to find out.

So we had both toilet products tested in a lab for four weeks.

First, the lab measured which bacteria were on the porcelain to begin with. Then we used YOKUU regularly, brushed the bowl and flushed.

After every flush, the lab checked what was left behind.

Two things stood out.

1. Up to 99% fewer bacteria linked to gut flora

Over the course of the test, the number of Enterobacteriaceae and coliform bacteria fell by up to 99%.

Meanwhile, more and more of what the lab found were our own probiotic cleaning helpers.

That's the principle behind YOKUU: give useful bacteria room to settle in.

2. Our cleaning helpers are still there after you flush

After repeated use, the lab found around 100,000 bacteria with the typical Bacillus profile on every 100 cm² of porcelain.

And that was after flushing.

With regular use, that number stayed fairly stable. So our cleaning helpers don't all wash away with the flush.

Both products showed the same thing. With Toilet Foam Explosion the change came a little faster, possibly because foam stays in contact with the bowl for longer.

A clean toilet doesn't have to be bacteria-free

At YOKUU, we don't think cleaning always has to mean getting rid of every last bacterium.

Why not give the useful ones a hand instead?

Our first lab test shows that probiotic cleaning helpers are still there after flushing, and that with regular use the mix of bacteria in the bowl clearly changes.

Our first test was relatively small, with two toilets. But it's a very promising start.

Want to try it at home? Use a Toilet Bomb once a week and a Toilet Foam Explosion about once a month.

That way the good bacteria regularly get a fresh chance to do their work.
